In response to the government's guidance, the Compass and Winston Churchill Theatres will no longer be putting on shows until further notice.

We are currently refunding tickets to customers for shows until 30 April. We will contact customers in due course, so it will help if ticketholders don't try to call in. We will contact you.

Please await further news for shows from 1 May.

Some of our room hires will continue as normal, although many are disrupted. Contact your provider for more information in each case.

Compass Kidz is not currently running.

Volunteer Roles

Volunteering for Hillingdon's Theatres and Heritage

Hillingdon Theatres and Heritage are now recruiting for NEW volunteers.

If you are interested in joining the team, please;

The Bar at Compass Theatre is open at most events. Often working as one of a pair, volunteers arrive an hour before the event starts to set up. The busiest time is during an interval and after the interval there can be a lot of clearing up to do, but there is a dishwasher. To volunteer at the Bar you need to be over 18, have good customer service skills, a warm and friendly manner, to be conscientious about hygiene, able to handle cash confidently and be prepared for the pressure of serving drinks to a full house in 15 minutes.

Box Office

Hillingdon Box Office is based at Compass Theatre and opens for telephone and in-person ticket sales from Tue-Sat 1030 - 1700.  We also open the box office before shows at Compass Theatre and Winston Churchill Theatre in order to hand out pre-booked tickets and sell tickets on the door. The box office is operated by one volunteer at a time and full training will be given before you'd be expected to take a shift alone. No previous box office experience is necessary but experience of computers, cash handling and customer service is useful. As well as responsibility for taking bookings and reservations using our computerised ticketing system, volunteers deal with general enquiries from visitors and callers so they meet many members of staff, customers and clients. We ask for experience in customer service along with a good telephone manner and the ability to work accurately with information.

  • Day Shifts are either 10.30am to 1.45pm or 1.45pm to 5pm, Tuesday to Saturday.
  • Show Shifts can be on any day of the week , opening 45 mins before curtain-up and closing 15 mins after the show starts. Once closed and cashed up you can either stay and watch the show, help out in the bar or go home.

To keep up with training on our system up to date we ask that volunteers offer a minimum of one show shift or one day shift per month.

The Friends of Ickenham Hall keep the Georgian gardens at Compass Theatre looking beautiful. The Garden consists of a walled garden with lawns and surrounding borders, two narrow borders outside the front wall and two rectangular plots to one side of the wall. These have been dug over and planted with over 730 plants the Georgians would have known and used. This needs lots of care and attention to detail, regular weeding and in the dry months regular watering and so we welcome offers of gardening help from volunteers.

Ushers are the welcoming face of our theatres and are vital for checking tickets, showing the audience to their seats, answering questions and, most importantly, in assisting the Duty Manager evacuate the venue in an emergency. Training is provided immediately before every shift so ushers can work as frequently or infrequently as they like. Shifts begin an hour before the start of an event and ends once all the audience have left auditorium. Although ushers often get to see the show, they are also required to be  outside the auditorium so you won’t see every show you work on. You will need to have good communication skills, a friendly and approachable manner and remain calm under pressure.

The Wardrobe at Compass has over 3000 items for hire and our team of Wardrobe Volunteers open it up on Wednesday evenings, from 8pm to 10pm during term-time. The Wardrobe Volunteers help local theatre groups rent costumes for shows and help individuals rent fancy dress. Shifts start at 7.45pm and end soon after 10pm but volunteers needn't come every week. The team are led by an experienced wardrobe mistress, Jilly Lloyd, who is also a volunteer. There is some paperwork, cash and card handling skills required and you will also need good customer service skills, lots of patience and a friendly manner.
