The Merchant of Venice
A new edited version of Shakespeare's play set in the 1950s

This production is a new, edited version of Shakespeare’s 16th Century play - now set in 1950s Venice.

Bassanio needs 3,000 ducats to partake in the choosing of three caskets for the hand in marriage of the beautiful and wealthy heiress, Portia.  Bassanio approaches his wealthy merchant friend Antonio for the ducats.  Alas, Antonio does not have the money but agrees to act as guarantor if Bassanio were to borrow the money from the Jewish money lender, Shylock.  At first, Shylock refuses to lend Bassanio the money due to the anti-sematic treatment he had received from Antonio, but eventually agrees on the condition that if the debt not be repaid on time that Shylock shall take a pound of Antonio’s flesh. The loan is not repaid and the play climaxes in a court case of moral versus legal entitlement.
