Compass is 50

The Compass Theatre in Ickenham is a well-used arts centre in Ickenham, that has been a valuable source of civic pride for Hillingdon residents, of all ages since 1968.

Generations of families have been performed, attended and engaged with the arts through the centre’s activities ever since and in order to ensure residents continue coming for another 50 years, it is felt this birthday is well worth celebrating.

The Opening of Ickenham Youth Theatre (since renamed Compass Theatre) took place on 26 October 1968. The first production in the theatre was Hans, the Witch and the Gobbin* a fantasy comedy drama performed by an adult cast for an audience of children.

To celebrate the occasion, Hillingdon Theatres are planning a revival production of the play, using volunteer assistance.  The resulting production would then be performed for an audience of children twice during the day on Saturday 14 July 2018.

To offer your help with this production or if you have any questions, please email

Running alongside the anniversary plans will be a volunteer supported archive / listening / video / photography project, seeking out original cast and company members, those who remember seeing it along with any anecdotes and recollections of what went into building and opening the theatre fifty years ago.

  • Did you see the original production of Hans, the Witch and the Gobbin at Ickenham Youth Theatre, back in 1968?
  • Were you in or involved with presenting the play?
  • Do you have pictures to share and stories to tell from any period of the theatre's 50 year history?

If so, please share via Facebook/CompassTheatre, join the Compass Theatre 50th Group or email

(*A gobbin is like a goblin but larger and more gormless)
